Trainee Visa
Updated: July 2025, 10
A trainee visa is required for training that does not involve any on-the-job training (including public training by national or local governments).
The main target group is that even if they acquire skills in Japan, they will not be able to work directly after returning to their home country such as managers and supervisorsetc.
A major difference from "Technical Intern Training" is that this visa is intended for "non-industrial" training.
Additionally, we have no employment relationship with any Japanese organization. The organization in the home country to which you are dispatched must pay your salary, etc.

Trainee visa application requirements
The main requirements for a training visa application are:
- The content cannot be obtained through simple repetition of tasks.
- Training participants have a certain level of knowledge, but they can only acquire it through training in Japan.
Example: Employees of a Japanese local subsidiary learn the rules and management standards of the Japanese head office.
Resumes of trainees are required documents. - The person in charge of training must have at least 5 years of practical experience related to training.
*You are required to submit your resume. - Training facilities and accommodation facilities are secured, and a life manager is assigned.
- Return travel expenses, etc. must be guaranteed.
- In addition, a system must be in place for reporting to the Immigration Bureau, etc. and storing documents in the event of an emergency.
What is a training plan?
When applying for a trainee visa, the content of the training planis evaluated.
- If there is on-the-job training, it must be within a certain percentage of the total training period.
*The key is to create a plan that includes the specific period and training content.
If the training content is group-based, a plan for each group is required. - The training period must be within one year.
Trainee visa Q&A
"Technical training" is carried out by signing an employment contract with the Japanese company that accepts the practical training.
In other words, you will acquire skills while working as a worker.
On the other hand, "Training" does not allow on-the-job training, so you cannot work as a worker.
“Training” is an activity that receives compensation.
This means that as a worker, you cannot enter the production line or stand on the sales floor.
For this reason, the receiving company must not receive compensation for selling the products made using the actual production line during the training or serving customers, so the products made during the training on the production line should not be disposed of or put on the market. This is not allowed, and customer service training will mainly consist of mock training (role-playing).
In addition, on-site visits and one-on-one instruction are also accepted as training content.
The maximum length of stay on a “short-term visitor” visa is 90 days.
Therefore, it is considered suitable for relatively short-term training such as orientation.
The "trainee" visa is considered suitable when there is a need to provide medium- to long-term education and training for management supervisors and executive candidates.
In any case, the content of the training will determine whether or not you will be granted a visa, so we recommend that you consider the content of the training.
It says that it can be renewed, but is it easy to do so?
The duration of the “training” qualification is generally one year.
It seems that renewal will only be granted if it is determined that there are special circumstances after hearing the circumstances from the applicant or the host company, so please be aware that it will not be easy and plan your training schedule with plenty of time. We recommend that you stand it up.
