Points to note if you get married while applying for permanent residence

Updated: July 2025, 9

If you get married while applying for permanent residence permission, it will not only affect your personal life, but it may also affect the application process. Below are some important points to keep in mind.

After getting married, you must report to the Immigration Bureau immediately.

Even after submitting your application for permanent residence permission, if you get married or divorced or there is any change in your family situation during the review period, you must report this to the Immigration Bureau.

In particular, marriage is considered a "significant change in status," so failure to report it may be considered a false application, which may have a negative impact on your approval.

If you are supporting your spouse, start the process early

If, after marriage, your spouse will be living with you in Japan and will be dependent on you, you will need to complete the following procedures as soon as possible.

  • Changes to your spouse's visa status (e.g. family visa, etc.)
  • Registering dependents for tax and social insurance purposes
  • Change of head of household on resident registration and cohabitation procedures

You will likely be asked for additional documentation

In particular, when it comes to dependent relationships, not only the applicant's own tax payment status but also the spouse's social insurance enrollment status will be subject to review.

When you report your marriage to the immigration bureau, you will often be asked to submit additional documents such as the following:

  • Spouse's Resident Tax Payment Certificate
  • Certificate of spouse's pension and insurance payment status
  • Spouse's employment certificate and salary slip

By taking care to complete the appropriate procedures and making the appropriate reports, and preparing the necessary documents early, you can wait for the results of your permanent residence application with peace of mind.
