Self-check for permanent residence application | Must-see for those on work visas

From the second half of 2024, a self-check sheet will be required when applying for permanent residence permission.
This sheet is for you to check for yourself whether you meet the requirements for permanent residence permission before applying.

There are three types of checklists, depending on your current status of residence.

1. For Japanese spouse visa and permanent resident spouse visa
2. For long-term resident visa
3. For work visa

This time"When applying for permanent residence from a working visa" (3. For work visas) will be explained.

• History of living in Japan
  
  　Have stayed in Japan for more than 10 years, with at least 5 years of that status held under work status (Engineer, Specialist in Humanities, International Services, etc.) or residence status (spouse of a Japanese national, etc.)
  　- Highly-skilled foreign talent: 70 points or more → 3 years or more
  　- Highly-skilled foreign workers with 80 points or more or special highly-skilled foreign workers → 1 year or more
  
  
• Tax payment status
  
  　You have paid your resident tax in a timely manner for the past five years.
  　There are no outstanding national taxes (income tax, consumption tax, etc.) or local taxes.
  
  
• Pension insurance premium payment status
  
  　You have paid your pension insurance premiums (national pension and employee pension) properly for the past two years.
  　- Highly-skilled foreign talent: 70 points or more for the past year
  
  
• Medical insurance premium payment status
  
  　You have paid your medical insurance premiums (health insurance, national health insurance, etc.) properly for the past two years.
  　- Highly-skilled foreign talent: 70 points or more for the past year
  
  
• Current status of residence
  
  　The period of stay must be determined to be "3 years" or "5 years."
  
  
• Legal compliance
  
  　You have never been fined, sentenced to imprisonment, or otherwise violated Japanese law in the past.
  
  

Points to note

There is a signature section on the checklist. Please make sure to sign it by hand.
　
Also, if there is even one "No" on the checklist, unfortunately, there is a high possibility that your application for permanent residence permission will be rejected.
In that case, we recommend that you apply after meeting the conditions so that the answer is "Yes."
Please note that even if all answers are "Yes," it does not necessarily mean that permission will be granted. The review will be conducted comprehensively.
